Abstract

Whenever the Church is being confronted with the development of new media, she has to answer the question which criteria are to be applied in order to form a judgement on them. The artide discusses this problern by analyzing four doctrinal documents and by elucidating their respective notions of the Church, the media, and the relations between them. The four texts are the Encyclica "Miranda Prorsus" of Pope Pius XII., the Decree "Inter Mirifica" of Vatican II, the Pastoral lnstruction "Communio et Progressio" 0971), and the "lnstruction on the Ecclesia! Vocation of the Theologian" 0990). As a result, certain parallels aretobe found: some structural traits in the notions of the Church and of the media do correspond to one another. From this the conclusion can be drawn that the notion of the church functions as criterion in judging the media.
