Abstract

Alles was jetzt folgt, dient der Begründung meiner These. "Massenkommunikation" andererseits. Wir müssen differenzieren. (...)

The theoretical and, to an extent, thoroughly practical guidelines for media policy of the Catholic Church are to be found in the Pastoral Directive, "Communio et Progresso", of the year 1971. Because these guidelines are by no means being followed in all fields, it should be a priority of any "new" media policy to secure a certain degree of recognition and respect for the Pastoral Directive. Yet, instead of this, there are numerous indications that "public opinion in the Church", already demanded by Pius XII. in 1950, is today disregarded even more than at the time of the Second Vatican Council. Over the period in question, araund 1965 to 1975, the Curch won for itself a high quality of communication and credibility. Much of this has since waned. Thus it is that renewed discontent regarding the representation of the Church in the public eye has arisen. Those concerned are not merely dissatisfied with certain shortcomings of the Church's media. They are already posing themselves the question as to the value of public opinion and transparency in the Church of the '90s.
