Julia Haug: Die Kraft in Volkes Kern? Zum Demokratiebild der deutschen Presse nach Tschernobyl und Fukushima

Nicht nur Japan wird von einer Woge überrollt, als am 11. März 2011 ein Tsunami die Küste von Fukushima flutet. Die Anti-Atom-Welle schwappt nach dem Super-GAU im japanischen Kernkraftwerk auch nach Deutschland – ähnlich wie 25 Jahre zuvor in Folge des nuklearen Unglücks in Tschernobyl: Seitdem sind Demonstrationen gegen die zivile Kernkraft ein Gradmesser für die Protestbereitschaft der deutschen Bevölkerung. Der Aufsatz widmet sich der Presseberichterstattung nach beiden Katastrophen. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der Frage, welches Demokratieverständnis die Massenmedien nahe legen. Ein Fazit der Verfasserin: Das dem Leser vorgestellte Demokratiebild wird überwiegend von der politischen Elite als Handlungsträger geprägt – nicht zuletzt auch durch den Einfluss der Landtagswahlkämpfe 2011 .

Julia Haug: The Strength in the Core of the People: The Image of Demo- cracy Conveyed by the German Press in the Aftermath of Tschernobyl and Fukushima

Not only was Japan flooded by an enormous wave when a tsunami hit the coast of Fukushima on March 11, 2011. In consequence of the Japanese ultimate MCA, the wave of an anti-nuclear-movement has also overrun Germany – similar to the aftermath of th tragic event in Tschernobyl 25 years earlier: From that time on, demonstrations against civilian nuclear power have been an indicator for the Germans’ willingness to protest. This essay analyses the reporting of the press after both disasters. Special focus is placed on the question, what idea of democracy do the mass media draw. One of the author’s conclusions: The idea of democracy presented to the reader is above all shaped by the political elite as protagonists – not least due to the impact of campaigns prior to the 2011 state elections.
