Abstract

This article is based on the presumption that journalistic ethics must necessarily pose themselves the question of truth. Concerning communication "truth" shows itself in three dimensions: the normative-ethical dimension, the ontological dimension and the pragmatic dimension. Taking two exemplary cases the author studies the journalistic handling of the criteria of truth. He takes the first series of test objects from the German il!ustrated weekly "Stern". The ambition to pursue a critically emancipatory form of journalism, apparent in the magazine's columns, stands in opposition to the fact that "Stern", as a business enterprise, is forced to follow the rules of capitalism. The second example presents the journalistic activities surrounding the scenes of the Gladbeck bank robbery (August 1988). In this case journalists so actively followed the criminal events (taking of hostages, murder etc.), that one can talk critically of an intentional "journalistic staging". The author criticizes the motives for such behaviour as reprehensible, particularly from a socio-ethical point of view.
