Kirche und Theologie in der "Westdeutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung" (WAZ) und den "Westfälischen Nachrichten" (WN)

Abstract

Der Themenbereich Kirche und Theologie soll hier in zwei weltlichen Medien, nämlim der "Westdeutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung" (WAZ) und den "Westfälischen Nachrichten" (WN), untersucht werden1• Dabei geht es um die Frage, welches Erscheinungsbild von Kirche und Theologie die W AZ sowie die WN den Lesern vermitteln. Weiter gilt es zu klären, inwieweit kirchliche Institutionen und ihre führenden Repräsentanten das Erscheinungsbild prägen. Die Analyse konzentriert sich im wesentlichen auf die Darstellung der katholischen Kirche und der katholischen Theologie. (...)

Themes on Church and Theology only play a marginal role in the reporting of the two regional dailies "Westfälische Nachrichten" (Münster) and "Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" (WAZ, Essen). Mainly on the back pages and the Feuilleton especially the pages with local news, some articles on Church and sometimes on Theology can be found. This survey shows that reporting is fixed on the institution of the Church and her (clerical) representatives like the Pope and the Bishops. It seems to be important to study further the reasons for and possibly correct such a situation in the light of modern Theology and communications. For Church and Theology such findings in the secular media might prove that the Vatican Council concept of the Church as the "people of God" has not penetrated daily life yet.
