Die Druckerei der Propaganda Fide im Dienste der Glaubensverbreitung

Abstract

Seit den Tagen ihrer Gründung im Jahre 1622 hat die Kongregation der Propaganda
Fide, die heute auch Kongregation für die Evangelisierung der Völker heißt und die
man das Missionsministerium der katholischen Kirche nennen kann, den Missionaren das Studium der Sprache des Landes, in dem sie arbeiteten, als dringend notwendig für die Verkündigung des Glaubens empfohlen. Ihr erster Sekretär Francesco Ingoli formulierte diese Forderung kurz und bündig: „Wenn man die Sprache des Landes nicht versteht, kann man in ihm nicht als Missionar tätig sein." Zum Erlernen der Sprachen brauchten die Missionare Grammatiken und Wörterbücher, und für die Evangelisierung benötigten sie Bibeln, Katechismen und liturgische Bücher. Um diese preiswert zu beschaffen, lag der Gedanke nahe, eine eigene Druckerei zu errichten, denn man sagte, daß man auf diese Weise ein Drittel der Ausgaben für die Bücher sparen könnte. The author, chief librarian at the Propaganda library in Rome gives the exact and detailed history of the Propaganda printing press from its beginning in 1622, till its merger with the Vatican printing press in 1908. The description is based on the respective documents from the Propaganda archives. The foundation, development, and the critical moments are described, as well as the publications up till 1700, the new rise of the Polyglotta under Ruggieri and Amaduzzi. The developments during the time of the French revolution, the new beginnings and modernization in the almost 300 years of the existence of the Propaganda press are presented. The difficult economical situation in the second half of the 19th century finally, and simultaneously with the new organization of the Vatican curia, led towards the merger of the Propaganda Fide with the Vatican printing press into the prescent Tipografia Poliglotta Vaticana.
