Bischofssynode Rom 1971 in den Tageszeitungen,

Abstract

Six Catholic and eleven non-catholic dailies from Zürich, Basle, Luzern, St. Gallen, Solothurn and Oberwal!is were surveyed with regard to their reporting on the 1971 Bishops' Synod in Rome. Compared with the daily press in the same region, the Catholic papers - except that at Luzern - take the lead. In a cross reference between the different regions, the smaller Catholic papers are far behind the big non-Catholic papers from Zürich, Basle and Luzern. Six non-Catholic papers gave regular information through their own Correspondents, whereas this was clone by only one Catholic daily (the Neue Zürcher Nachrichten with Basler Volksblatt). On the other hand, the non-Catholic papers ignored the reporting of
the Catholic News Agency of Switzerland, KIP A, which was the chief source of information for the catholic papers. As far as original editorial comments are concerned, the noncatholic Neue Zürcher Zeitung by far takes the lead. As a result of the survey it can be said that the concept "Catholic Press" covers only part of the journalistic reality in Germanspeaking Switzerland. The concept needs to be revised, to be distinguished, and newly defined according to information and comments provided on Church and theological questions.
