Abstract

Constanze Straub: Ecclesiastical crisis and war communication: lofty and patriotic. Sermons in Swiss radio broadcasting before and during the Second World War

Theoretical approaches to crisis and war communication are mostly concentrated on war reporting. The findings of studies related to this subject can be applied to other media content, as this explorative study shows. It deals with crisis and war communication in Swiss radio broadcasting before and during the Second World War, more specifically in broadcast sermons of the Catholic and the Protestant churches. For this purpose, first the history of the radio sermons was worked up. With this background the criteria of the qualitative content analysis were developed from the techniques of propaganda and the crisis and war communication. The major results: The communication during the war is more patriotic than the crisis communication before the war. Moreover, the Catholics, unlike the Protestants, adopted the ideas of the “Geistige Landesverteidigung” propagated by the authorities. Surprisingly, the degradation of the Jews was not censored in spite of the Swiss policy of neutrality.
