Der politische Witz. Ein Genre politischer Kommunikation und Maßstab politischer Freiheiten

Abstract

Der Artikel untersucht politische Witze in Diktatur und Demokratie. Der raum-zeitliche Focus liegt auf der NS- und DDR-Diktatur einerseits und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland andererseits. Die historischen Quellen werden auf Authentizität geprüft und mittels zweier Theorien interpretiert: der Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns von Jürgen Habermas und der Öffentlichkeitstheorie von Jürgen Gerhards und Friedhelm Neidhardt.

Mit ihrer Hilfe können Witze und verwandte Kommunikationsformen als Maß für die Freiheit von Staat und Gesellschaft interpretiert werden. Die Kombination von historischer Quellenkritik und theoriegeleiteter Interpretation macht gleichwohl auf eine Aporie der Erkenntnis aufmerksam: Ohne Theorien fehlt es der Interpretation an Substanz und Stringenz, doch jeder Einsatz von Theorien schränkt die Interpretation ein.

Rudolf Stöber: The Political Joke. Jokes as Genre of Political Communication and Scale for Political Freedom

The artiole deals with political jokes with the spatiotemporal focus being on Nazi Germany, the GDR, and the FRG before 1990. The historical documents are (I) checked for their authenticity and (II) interpreted by applying two sociological theories: the theory of communicative action (Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns) by Jürgen Habermas and the theory of the public sphere developed by Jürgen Gerhards and Friedhelm Neidhardt.

It is suggested here that both theories can help consider political jokes and related forms of communication as a means to measure the degree of freedom in society and state. However, combining historical analysis with theory-guided approaches generates a paradox: Without theoretical guidance, there is no historical interpretation; conversely, use of theory limits the scope of historical interpretation.
