Abstract

The television series "Das Wort zum Sonntag", the most wellknown preaching programme on German television, is critisized from all sides. From time to time, theologians complain that it does not express a Christian conviction, but a general religiousness. The term "civil religion" serves to put in concrete form what is meant by a general religiousness. Starting off from the discussion about "civil religion"in the USA, the phenomenom of civil religion is arranged in the Federal Republic of Germany. By means for the outline of Hermann Lübbe, some linguistic patterns of "civil religion" can be worked out. The essential linguistic teatures of Christian preaching are directly compared to those. "Civil religion" does, for instance, not testify to the God of Jesus Christ, but refers to a higher spirit which is not specified more in detail. Christian preaching wants to provoke innovatory action in order to overcome oppressive structure. "Civil religion", in contrast, primarily affirms the status quo, for it assumes a common basic conviction in society. Therefore, a moral demand is in the fore. A Christian language, in contrast, distinguishes itself by means of welcoming practice of the witness, who abstains from any psychological pressure. An empirical investigation offour exemplary "Worte zum Sonntag" of 1958, 1968, 1981 and 1989 revealed on the basis of the language patterns worked out the following: The most well-known preaching programme on German television has to rely on civil religion. In an era that is no Ionger marked by popular religion, a television programme must start off from the common consent in order to satisfy the wide circle of addresses. "Das Wort zum Sonntag", however, must not confine itself to "civil religion", for it cannot testify the spirit of God in the world. "Civil religion" must be developped further towards a determined Christian preaching. Only then will "Wort zum Sonntag" come up to its requirements.
