Die Funktion von Wissen wird traditionell in verschiedener Hinsicht als ambivalent betrachtet, vor allem in Beziehungsfragen: Beispielsweise besteht zumeist dann kein besonderes Interesse an einer Kenntnis geheimer Dinge, wenn dadurch eine wichtige Beziehung problematisch werden könnte. Hinter der volkstümlichen Akzeptanz von Unwissenheit und Ignoranz steckt insofern die richtige Einsicht, daß "Erwerb und Akkumulation von Wissen ... nicht nur eine positive Erweiterung der Welterfahrung, sondern eben auch ... eine Potenzierung von Konfliktmöglichkeiten" bedeuten. The author deals with the complex of mystery, of taboos and of the temptation to violate them. In doing so, he comes to realize that objects often remain attractive owing to their degree of uncertainty, for experience has to reckon with a surprise potential. The author expands his thoughts the mysterious, magic, and transeendental nature in public symbols which is interpreted by bim in relation to individual psychic processes. After reflecting the current renaissance of occultism the author concludes with considerations on the importance of mystery in the traditional reHgions.
