Abstract

What are the chances as weil as the dangers in transmitting religious contents with the medium of television, is the basic question of this contribution. The author discusses judgements on the lively and penetrating programmes of the "electronic Church" in the United States. Theseprogrammes find quite an interest with the public, which is also reflected in the financial contributions of the viewers. Are the
"electronic Church" activities manipulation, business or a trivialisation of the message of Christ, or even "opium for the people?". Isamedium which can only show the surface of things, able at all to deal with religious contents, or must there not be attributed to television a kind of "sacramental symbolism" similar to picture Bibles of the mediaeval times in placing the Gospel into the daily life of a secular
culture? The author proposes totheGerman Churches to deal more deeply with the sociology and psychology of religious programming in television.
