Grenzen religiöser Kommunikation: Zum Problem der theologischen Sprachbarrieren

Abstract

Es gehört zum Werdegang großer Entdeckungen, daß sie ihren anfänglichen Glanz, wie neu aufflammende Sterne, rasch wieder verlieren. Scheint sich zunächst in ihrem Licht alles Erdenkliche zu klären, so werden nun zunehmend auch ihre Grenzen sichtbar. Nach allen Anzeichen zu schließen, ist die Entdeckung des Prinzips Sprache in diese zweite - selbstkritische - Phase eingetreten. Herrschte zunächst die Neigung vor, seinen Geltungsbereich möglichst weit zu spannen, so schärft sich neuerdings nun umgekehrt das Gefühl für die ihm von innen und außen her gezogenen Grenzen. Im Kern dieser neuen, wenn man so will 'negativen' Spracherfahrung steht die Erkenntnis, daß Sprache im Gegensinn zu ihrer Grundfunktion anstatt verbinden auch trennen kann, ja daß sie als Brücke auch immer schon Schranke ist. Das bringt die schon fast zum wissenschaftlichen Schlagwort gewordene Rede von den 'Sprachbarrieren' zum Ausdruck. (...)

The concept oflanguage barriers originally developed by socio-linguistics, if adopted by theology, can help to explain many ofthe problems ofreligious communication. Apart from the external language barriers caused by the use of different idioms of professional or social groups, or through attempts to dominate, or by historical erosion, there arealso language barriers which make it impossible to speak ofGod correctly, limiting also the full communication ofindividual, subjective experiences. Polemicallanguage also creates barriers since its aim is
to discriminate against the enemy and exclude him from communications. The growing influence of secularisation has alsotobe noted in sofaras it creates Iosses in meaning and Ievels ofunderstanding. A further obstacle to communication is the formalism oftheological thinking today, especially where it is linked with a narrow concept oflanguage in philosophicallanguage analysis. The task ofremoving barriers, limitations and false developments is tremendous. Full communication which goes beyond confessional boundaries can only be possible to the extent that it grows with inner-Church ecumenism. Only on this Ievel will the exercise of conflict-free language and speech be possible.
