Publizistikstudenten in Münster: Thesen, Probleme und Ergebnisse einer Totalerhebung

Abstract

Herbst 1973 fiel am Institut ftir Publizistik (IfP) der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster der Entschluß, eine Befragung möglichst aller Münsteraner Publizistikstudenten durchzuftihren. Seit Jahren hatte man sich dort vergeblich um ein neues wissenschaftliches Selbstverständnis bemüht, um eine inhaltliche Grundlage für die Entwicklung einer neuen Studienordnung. All diese Bemühungen waren regelmäßig an kontroversen theoretischen Positionen der Beteiligten gescheitert. Hinzu kamen wachsende Belastungen des wissenschaftlichen Personals durch hochschulpolitische Probleme und durch einen sprunghaft ansteigenden Zulauf teilweise "NC-geschädigter" (NC = Numerus Clausus) Abiturienten zum Publizistikstudium 1, wodurch die personellen, finanziellen und räumlichen Kapazitäten des Instituts bald gesprengt wurden. In January 1976, 467 students at the Institute of Communications at the University of Munster were interviewed about their expectations in communications studies and the communications profession. With the use of a standardised analysis, the aim was to gather new orientation data in order to review the curriculum in this field of studies. Information available up till then was not sufficiently clear, and it was to be expected that the evergrowing number ofstudents resulted from incorrect professional expectations, or from the Iack of professional experience and information, or again, psychological attempts at compensation in following decisions without being obliged to correct them. A deductive typology developed according to such criteria has not yet been possible as a result of this study, but many professional insights have been obtained from the data assembled, and this has made a revision of study plans and curricula easier to achieve and more
meaningful in its application. The results could also be applied to the Church's interests in communications training.
