„Publiks" Ende: Schwächen unserer pluralistischen Kommunikationsverfassung

Abstract

Angesichts eines noch immer heißen Themas, wie es die „Publik"-Geschichte darstellt, erlaubt sich der Verfasser, eine Bitte an den Anfang zu stellen: sein Beitrag möchte nicht mißverstanden werden. Er ist lediglich die aus aktuellen Diskussionen heraus entstandene Würdigung eines bestimmten Aspekts der Vorgänge um die katholische Wochenzeitung, des kommunikationspolitischen nämlich, und dies auf dem Boden der in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland geltenden „Kommunikationsverfassung", sei sie nun (in Teilen) aufgeschrieben oder nicht. Der Beitrag kann hingegen noch nicht sein der Anfang der Geschichtsschreibung über „Publik". Dazu leistet zwar die Zeitschrift „Communicatio Socialis" ihren Anteil in der seit vielen Heften laufenden
Serie „Materialien zur Entstehungsgeschichte von ,Publik'". Zur gründlichen Untersuchung der Quellen und zur abgewogenen historischen Darstellung jedoch war die Zeit bis heute zu kurz. (...)

The Catholic Weekly „Publik" (Frankfurt) began in September 1968 and ceased publication in November 1971. The capital, initially DM 15 Million, was subsequently increased to DM 28 Million, but was insufficient to rnake the publication self-supporting. The cessation of „Publik" aroused a great deal of protest. Fears were expressed that the Gerrnan Bishops, who had given the rnoney, stopped publication for political reasons. Such an opm1on inferred that the paper had been too progressive and too much inclined to the Ieft. Others wanted to justify the closure of this publication as being too narrow a forum for a full range of opinion among the different groups of German Catholics to be heard.
Dr. Schmolke's theory is that „Publik" tried to please everybody, but on this account did not sufficient!y recognize the economic conditions of the market. The publication failed to obtain a stable readership from subscribers because it did not concentrate on one clear line. This influenced the economic conditions. However, this purely economic aspect is not dealt with by the author.
