Presse und Funk im Territorium von Papua und Neuguinea (1)

Abstract

Das Territorium Papua und Neuguinea besteht in seiner jetzigen Form als australisches Verwaltungsgebiet seit 1949. Es umfaßt den Ostteil der Insel Neuguinea und die diesem Gebiet benachbarten Inselgruppen der ehemaligen Kolonialgebiete
Deutsch-Neuguinea (Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land) und Britisch-Neuguinea (Papua).
Während der Westteil Neuguineas, der zweitgrößten Insel der Welt, bereits 1828
von den Holländern in Anspruch genommen wurde, einigten sich Deutschland und
England auf eine Teilung des Ostteils im Jahre 1885. Der britische Teil ging 1905/06
an das Commonwealth of Australia über. Mit dem Verlust aller deutschen Kolonien
nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde das ehemalige Deutsch-Neuguinea 1921 nach
siebenjähriger Militärverwaltung vom Völkerbund unter australische Verwaltung als
„Mandated Territory" gestellt. (...)

As far as Press is concerned, the first publications concerning New Guinea were official or semi-official papers of the colonial agencies or governments. At a very early date, the Christian missions started publications, partly in native languages, printed in mission printing plants. Later in Papua, the govcrnment anthropologist, F. E. Williams, started (1929) an English-language paper for native people. Two weeklies („ The Rabau! Times" and „Papuan Courier") were founded 1925 and 1930 respectively. One of the big difficulties for press work in New Guinea is - beside others - the great number of languages, some of them only spoken by 300 people or less. The so-called Pidgin-English and Police-Motu serve - beside English itself - as a link between the different native language-groups. - The Press today can be divided into newspapers and magazincs. The magazines may be subdivided into those published a) by the government offices, b) by church-bodies and those published by c) private people or organisations.
