Abstract

Den Massenmedien wird im kommunistischen China nicht nur deshalb außerordentliche Bedeutung beigemessen, weil sie die Mittel sind, Anordnungen der Regierung weiterzugeben, sondern weil sie als Mittel zur Bekehrung, zu einer wirklichen geistigen Wandlung angesehen werden. Das kommunistische Regime in China legt besonderen Wert auf Überzeugung, - was den Zwang nicht ausschließt. Augenblichlich sagt die Propaganda folgendes: Die Gedanken Maos müssen die ganze Seele (dieses Wort wird tatsächlich gebraucht) durchdringen; sie erzeugen ein inneres Ringen, bei dem man erfährt, wie egoistisch man noch ist, daß man für sich selbst lebt und arbeitet, aber nicht für das Volk, nicht für die Revolution, nicht für die
Weltrevolution. (...)

Communist China spares no effort nor money when it comes to the use of the mass
media for the spread of its propaganda even to the farthest corners of China. The people have transistors and are eager to listen to programs also from foreign sources. Among the latter worthy of mention is a Protestant broadcasting station in the Philippines. The Chinese listen to this Station and the cultural programs on the others because they are hungry for information outside the usual fare they receive. China is a spiritual desert where no one dares to mention a word about religion, however it is also a land where careful religious broadcasting would reap muc:h fruit. We need several broadcasting stations directed towards the China Mainland capable of broadcasting many hours of carefully planned programs on religious subjects. This would be valuable not only for the present but also as a preparation for the future when China will be open again. At least for the present, the only means the Churc:h has to carry out her mission to one-fourth or onefifth of the human race is broadcasting.
