Abstract

Deutsch:

In January 1953 the Catholic News Agency (KNA) commenced opera- tions. The 60th anniversary of its founding provides a good opportuni- ty to take a look at both the development and current situation of the KNA. The agency reaches more than two-thirds the circulation of Ger- man daily and weekly newspapers, in addition to the most important broadcasting editorial offices and the church press. For that reason the media relations of the Catholic Church hardly play a central role for the KNA. Nonetheless, in this anniversary year, the challenges are tremendous: the news agency market has always been highly compe- titive and the loss in reach of the newspaper companies in the reader- ship and advertising markets affect the financial circumstances of the agencies. Furthermore, towards its shareholders, the dioceses, and in light of the subsidies it depends upon, the KNA must regularly prove its indispensability.
