Systemtheorie als Innovation in der Kommunikationswissenschaft. Inhaltliche Hemmnisse und institutionelle Erfolgsfaktoren im Diffusionsprozess

Abstract

Auch wenn Luhmanns Systemtheorie in der "scientific community" der deutschen Kommunikationswissenschaft vorwiegend mit Kritik und Abgrenzung zu kämpfen hatte, ist sie heute fester Bestandteil der kognitiven, sozialen und historischen Identität des Fachs. Der Beitrag zeichnet die Verbreitung der Theorieinnovation mit Hilfe eines Phasenmodells nach und sucht eine Erklärung für die Irritation Erfolg trotz Ablehnung. Als theoretischer Rahmen dient Rogers Diffusionskonzept. Die Quellenbasis der qualitativen Untersuchung besteht aus Diskussionsbeiträgen zur Systemtheorie (Aufsätze, Rezensionen, Personalartikel und Tagungsberichte), die in Fachzeitschriften zwischen 1964 und 2007 publiziert worden sind. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Neunziger Jahre eine Wende im Diffusionsverlauf markieren. Den Hemmnissen Komplexität und Inkompatibilität, zu der neben erkenntnistheoretischen Differenzen auch Normverstöße gehören, stehen die strukturellen Erfolgsfaktoren inhaltliche Kontinuität am Münsteraner Institut und konsequente Nachwuchspolitik gegenüber.

Manuel Wendelin: System Theory as an innovation in communication science. Substantive and institutional barriers to success factors in the diffusion process

Although Luhmann's System Theory predominantly met with criticism and decline in the scientific community of German communication science, today it is an inherent part of the cognitive, social, and historical identity of the discipline. This article traces the distribution of the theory innovation using a phase model and seeks an explanation for the irritation success despite aversion. Theoretical background is Roger's diffusion-concept. Sources ofthis qualitative studyare contributions in the debate on System Theory, published in the common scientific journals (articles, reviews, reports on conferences and about persons). The results show a turn in the discussions, taking place in the 1990s. Complexity and incompatibility - including differenees in epistemology and normative violations - as obstacles in the diffusion process are confronted with the suecess faetors continuity as regards content at the institute in Münster and a consequent output of scientists for the next generation.
