Die Frage des "medialen Papsttums" ist nach Auffassung des Autors nicht neu. Früher gehörte sie zur Identitätsfindung der päpstlichen Monarchie in ihrer Konkurrenz zur weltlichen Monarchie. Das christliche Imperium brauchte dazu jedoch als Zeichen in der Öffentlichkeit ihr Sacerdotium. In der Gegenwart vollzog Johannes Paul II. die Imitatio Christi öffentlich nicht als eine Gegen-Welt zum alltäglichen business as usual, sondern als Möglichkeit, das Heil gemäß der Bibel zu finden. Seine Imitatio kulminierte schließlich in seinem öffentlichen Sterben, mit dem er der Welt den tiefsten Sinn allen Leids aus christlichem Glauben heraus vermittelte.

Otto Kallscheuer: A Media Pope by Body and Life
The question of a "media papacy" is not a new one, according to the reflections of the author. In former times it was part of identity-finding of papal monarchy in rivalry to secular monarchy. However, the christian imperium also needed a public sign of its sacerdotium. In our times, John Paul II. performed in public the imitation of Christ not as a sacred alternative world to daily ordinary business but as condition for the opportunity to find salvation according to the Gospel. Finally his imitation culminated in his public dying in which he demonstrated to the world the ultimate sense of all human suffering.
