Abstract

Marianne Skarics: Mainstream cinema as a substitute church? Reflections
on the partial function equivalence of church and cinema

The western society is characterized by growing renunciation of the official churches and at the same time by growing interest in religious themes, autonomaus search for sense in life, and the use of different elements, as for example mass media, to answer questions of contingency. Especially mainstream film becomes a substitute by taking over functions originally connected to religion, and compared to traditional religions film has several advantages in transporting its matters of faith, and therefore does it very successfully. By creating offerings of sense-giving and models for life without a direct connection to (a) god, mainstream films give their audience autonomy while it is searching for sense. The set of religious messages that are usually transported in subconscious levels of films work on the audiences subconscious mind, while on the conscious mind all the audience wants to get from the movies not answers to questions of contingency but just entertainment. Therefore and also because of its reduction of "relating life to god" tQ "relating life to nature or man" the cinematic matters of faith can even make an impression on people who are not interested in any religious beliefs. Nowadays by still mostly disapproving Hollywood-mainstream films, representatives of the church deprive themselves of the chance to gain insights that would be useful for renewing evangelization and church communications, for it is mainstream cinema that gives expression to the Ionging for answers to questions of contingency and making sense in life.
