"Zeig mir wer du wirklich bist ...". Was wir sehen, wenn wir Big Brother sehen - Sieben Lesarten eines Medienereignisses

Abstract

Big Brother steht als Chiffre für eine Gesellschaft, in der nur noch wenig verborgen bleibt, in der eine übermächtige Staatsgewalt die Kontrolle auch über die intimsten Lebensbereiche übernommen hat. Nichts bleibt ungeregelt und vor allem - das ist zentral - nichts unbeobachtet. Der Mythos des Big Brother indes hat eine gegenwärtig nur mittelbar als politisch erkennbare subtile Auferstehung erlebt, die in der "Medial Society" einigen Wirbel verursacht hat. Und zwar nicht nur in Deutschland. Ausgestrahlt wird oder wurde bislang in Spanien, Großbritannien, den Niederlanden, Schweden, Portugal, Deutschland, der Schweiz, Italien und Belgien. Geplant ist das Format der "Game-Show" Big Brother für 2001 aber auch in Polen, Dänemark, Norwegen und Irland. (...)

Lars Rademacher: "Show Me Who You Really Are ... " - What We See When We Watch Big Brother- Seven Interpretations of a Media Event

In the past months discussions about the media event "Big Brother" have been very emotional. Many commentators and politicians saw an urgent need for action recommending to ban the show altogether. The lack of objective arguments shows that the format of "Big Brother" is considered a break of taboos causing shock and outrage. On this basis, the following article presents seven possible readings of the show ranging from anthropological and sociological aspects to a complex genre analysis. These interpretations reinforce the basic assumption that "Big Brother" cannot be defined unambiguously due to the various perspectives construed. Therefore, the show is a precise reflection of adolescent's state of identity between a loss of orientation and strive for experience at the begin of the new millennium.
