Abstract

Spätestens seit dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil konvergieren die beiden Themen Mission und Medien: Trotz aller Ambivalenzen sind die Massenmedien Mittel, die die Ausbreitung des Glaubens unterstützen und verstärken können. "Die Kirche würde vor dem Herrn schuldig, wenn sie nicht diese machtvollen Mittel nützte." Und die große Missionsenzyklika Redemptoris missio (RM) von 1990 bezeichnet die technischen Kommunikationsmittel als eine eigene, neu entstehende Welt, als einen sozialen und kulturellen Raum, ohne den Information, Bildung und Lebensorientierung nicht mehr denkbar seien. Ulrike Vollmer: Finding a Mirrar - Redemption in the Films of Jane Campion

The paper "Einen Spiegel finden - Erlösung in den Filmen von Jane Campion" (Finding a Mirror- Redemption in the Films of Jane Campion) discusses Campion's films "An Angel at My Table", "The Piano" and "The Portrait of a Lady" with regard to their theological implications. Initially, the films are considered individually on the basis of a detailed analysis of each film. From a theological perspective, the metaphor of the mirror takes on a particularly important role, as it is employed by Campion to show that the process of finding oneself is only possible in relation to a counterpart. Furthermore, the discussions of the films try to establish that Campion sees redemption also as a bodily reality. The basis for a comparison of the films with theological statements of the late 20th century, referring to redemption, is thus created. Based mainly on the theology of the Catholic theologian Gisbert Greshake, this comparison uncovers - apart from parallels between the films and theology- above a1l the absence of a bodily dimension in theology's understanding of redemption.
